Throne of Glass

Celeana Sardothien is ready to give up life when Captain Westfall comes to visit her in the mines. She can win her freedom after a year of slavery. For this, she only has to win a competition from the king and become his personal assassin.

Prince Dorian picked her to be his Champion. If she survives every test and trial and earns her place in the final, she has to kill the other contestants to win.

Captain Westfall helps her train and they train a lot. They do everything so she has a chance. Nehemia comes to look at a few trainings and starts talking with Celeana. They become good friends.

After candidates are found dead in the castle, their bodies ripped to shreds, she finds herself in mysteries concerning the whole kingdom’s history.

Meanwhile, Captain Westfall, Prince Dorian, and Celeana become friends and are even falling in love. The chance of ruining their friendship is not worth the chance for love.

The Characters

Celeana Sardothien: An eighteen-year-old assassin. She is trained since she was a child. When betrayed by her master and imprisoned in the salt mines of Endovier, she believed she would die there. After a year she gets the opportunity to be prince Dorian’s champion and earn her freedom. If she works as the personal assassin for the king for four years, she will be free. During the contest, she pretends to be Lillian Gordaina, a jewel thief from Bellhaven.

Dorian Havilliard: The crown prince of Adarlan. He picks Celeana as his champion for the competition. Dorian thinks different about how they should rule the country. This is why he tries to stand up against his father, but he never really succeed in this. He is a real lady’s man and it seems he has some feelings for Celeana.

Chaol Westfall: The captain of the Guard and the best friend of Dorian. There is nothing he would not do to keep Dorian safe. He trains Celeana for the competition. Chaol has feelings for Celeana but also knows what kind of threat she would be for the kingdom. He does not know what to do with this.

Nehemia Ytget: A princess from the kingdom of Eyllwe. She came to the castle to form an alliance to save their own kingdom. She pretends that she doesn’t speak the common tongue. Celeana also speaks the native language of Eyllwe, so they learn each other the language.

Kaltain Rompier: Kaltain is a young lady who comes from a rich family. They are not the most widely know and do not have as many privileges in the King’s court. She wants to come close to Dorian to become his bride. This is why she does not like Celeana. She would do anything to become Dorian’s bride and finally have some power.

Cain: Cain is the champion from Duke Perrington. He is enormous and is everyone’s favorite to win. Cain was in the king’s army and comes from the White Fang Mountains.

My Opinion:

My sister made me read this book. I was not feeling like reading again, but I gave it a chance. Well, I loved it!

It made me fall in love with the whole series and I actually read the first 5 books in less than two weeks. I fell from the stairs because I could not put the book down. So watch out with stairs!

The action – love ratio was very good. Enough action and just enough love. Some of the fighting scenes were so good, I could just see it happening. I was really there.

My sister reads this series more than once and I totally get it. I want to start all over again. I love the assassin part and the strong female role. Together with fantasy and magic, it is a book for me.

Throne of Glass made me love the writing of Sarah J. Maas and I am going to read all her books.  She will do the same for you. So if you are done with this one you will also like the Court of Thorns and Roses series!
